Porto Empedocle, Sicily July 2004..The German ship Cap Anamur, had rescued 37 mainly Sudanese migrants from a rubber dinghy. The ship was blocked by Italian Coast Guard boats a few miles outside Porto Empedocle's Harbour, in Sicily. After a three weeks odyssey with African asylum seekers aboard, was granted permission to dock in Sicily. Elias Bierdel President of the Cap Anamur group and captain Stefan Schmidt were accused of aiding and abetting illegal immigration and arrested.
